The Vault Taphouse / Kobold Tasting Room is a natural progression, born out of our love of beer and our love of community.

After retiring from 26 years as an Air Traffic Controller and moving to Bend, Steve unleashed his creative side and started home brewing.  Discovering he had a knack for making very drinkable beer (as our neighbors on 3rd Street would say) Steve designed and built a two barrel, nano-brewery on his property in Bend’s westside.  He started Kobold Brewing in 2015 and turned his small brewery into a successful and busy operation.

After more than a year of selling Kobold beer one keg at a time, Steve and Heather decided a change was necessary.  In 2016, they purchased a building in downtown Redmond and shortly after got the ball rolling for The Vault Taphouse, which opened in July of 2017.   Steve continued to brew beer on his system in Bend, cranking out award winning beer, but after less than a year with the new taphouse, realized he needed a bigger system and more production.

In March of 2018, Kobold Brewing purchased an industrial space in Redmond and is in the process of constructing a 10 barrel brew house.  Since it’s just Steve and his sweat equity, the process is a slow one but we’re getting there! Our goal is to be able to get back into distribution and have the time to bottle some of our barrel aged beers and can our most popular ones.  Stay tuned!
